Research
We are proud of our longstanding commitment to expanding the range and diversity of research beyond the traditional core of the discipline, focused on the study of ancient Greece and Rome. Classics and Ancient History at Exeter is fundamentally concerned with exploring ancient societies and cultures across the breadth of Afro-Eurasia, and their subsequent impacts in a global context. Our research spans a wide range of specialisms, including ancient language, literature, history, material and visual culture, philosophy and science, digital humanities, and classical reception. Our researchers are widely recognised for their commitment to interdisciplinarity, collaboration with the arts and charity sectors, and engagement with contemporary issues facing the wider world.
We are 4th in the UK for world-leading Classics research.
(Research Excellence Framework 2021)
Research is integral to our community. All colleagues work individually and collaboratively as members of our distinctive research centres.
We have a strong interdisciplinary ethos, with close links to related fields including history, archaeology, philosophy, visual arts, and linguistics.
Research centres
All colleagues and research postgraduates at Exeter are encouraged to join one or more of our four research centres. The centres serve as focal points for our research culture through their regular activities, including hosting invited speakers, workshops and international conferences, providing opportunities for feedback on work in progress, and staging regular reading groups.
