Classics, Ancient History, Religion and Theology

Francesca Kubler

Postgraduate Researcher
Classics and Ancient History

I am a PhD candidate at the University of Exeter. Though I am based in the department of Classics and Ancient History, my research is interdisciplinary, and intersects with Comparative Literature. My thesis is tentatively titled, 'The Role of Classical Texts and Figures in Shaping the Development of the New Woman in fin-de-siècle Women's Writing', and explores how queer women during the fin de siècle utilised the Classics as a catalyst for the development of organised feminist movements. Aside from my thesis, I am interested in gender, sexuality, and feminism; presentations of the body in the ancient world; Classical reception; Greek and Latin literature; and translation studies.

I am Editor in Chief for Pegasus, the Classics and Ancient History department's PGR journal. I am also an editor and website manager for Ekklesia Magazine, which is an open-access, online magazine which publishes articles, essays, and creative pieces relating to any aspect of the ancient world. I assist with the Michael Field Project at the University of Dartmouth, transcribing parts of Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper's journals.

I have an instagram page where I post occasional updates on my academic work, which can be found at @francesca.kubler
